2010 SCTP National Championship

World Shooting Complex, Sparta, IL - by Tom Schewe

7/21-24/2010: The 2010 SCTP National Championship took place July 21-24 at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL. 1480 young shooters from 27 different states took part in the competition. 129 squads shot sporting clays, 125 squads shot skeet, and 234 squads shot trap. The weather for the event was dry but Hot and Humid as is typical for the mid-west in the summer with a heat index of nearly 120 degrees on Thursday, Friday, & Saturday so staying cool and well hydrated between competitions was a priority for shooters and spectators alike.

This year as in the past, The Nationals represent the culmination of a year’s worth of dedication and hard work by the shooters, coaches, and supporters of the SCTP program. This year’s event was well organized, well staffed, and considered a success by all involved. For those attending the competition for the first time it’s both refreshing and inspiring to have the opportunity to be part of such a large competition. Programs like the SCTP and events like The Nationals are crucial for the long term health and survival of the shooting sports as they are an excellent way to encourage non-shooters to become involved in shooting. A special “Thanks” should go to The NSSA, The NSCA, The NSSF, Browning, Remington, Federal Ammunition, Winchester Ammunition, White Flyer, Hornady, Cabela’s, SHE Outdoor Apparel, Ruger, Promatic, Mec, Americase, Hodgon, Pilla Performance Eyewear, Champion Traps & Targets, Spolar, Gamaliel Shooting Supply, The NMLRA, Otis Outdoors, Bob Allen Sportswear, The Great Outdoors Co., HiViz Shooting Systems, MGM Targets, Make-A-Break, who were the primary sponsors of this year’s event. It is through the financial support from companies like these as well as the sponsorship by local businesses and individuals that provide the opportunity for young people to become part of the SCTP program. Please be sure to remember them when, as a shooter/outdoors person, you are looking for a product or service they may have.

Winners of this year’s event needed to shoot well and stay focused to earn bragging rights as the difference between the 1st and everyone else came down to 1 or 2 targets or in several classes the top team was determined by a shoot-off. Whether a 1st timer or a seasoned veteran of the SCTP Nationals everyone who participated or attended this year’s event left a winner as a result of the experience. We have posted a link to the scores and our pictures. We encourage all the attendees to send us your pictures (or a link to your pictures) so we can post them here for everyone to share. If you would like also send us a paragraph or two on your SCTP experience to be considered for publication.
