2010 Kansas State Sporting Clays Championship

Kansas State

Smoky Valley Sporting Clays; Lindsborg, Kansas - by Kay Mein

6/25-27/2010: Derrick Mein captured his 7th Kansas State sporting clays title by defeating father Rick Mein by 1 target June 26-27 at Smoky Valley Sporting Clays, Lindsborg, Kansas. This is the 6th time the Mein’s have teamed up to take the HOA and Runner Up honors at the Kansas State Championships. When asked about getting beat again by Derrick, Rick stated that he was a winner either way!

Fewer than expected shooters turned out for the Kansas State shoot with 194 shooting the main event, down from the previous year. It was typical summer weather in Kansas with hot temperatures Friday and Saturday and cloud cover on Sunday, which helped make the temperatures more comfortable. Event sponsors for the shoot were Greenwood Stockmaker (Jim Greenwood), White Flyer, Lincoln Traps, IEC Industrial Electric Company (Doug Unruh), PTC Piping Technology Company, Remington, and Kemen Shells. Dennis Linden set targets for the event.

Kevin Jacobson won the prelim 100-bird course shot by 135 competitors with a 96. Master 1 went to Derrick Mein with a 94. Doug Potts, Mein, and AA shooter Andrew Donahue all had 94’s on the course. Class A winner was Morley Koll. While B and C class winners with a pair of 85’s were Tyler Reno and Brian Thompson. D 1 was Bill Senne, with E Class winner being Clayton Moniot. Concurrent winners were: Lady Debra Taylor, Sub. Jr. Tyler Reno, Jr. Tanner Perry, Vet. Doug Potts, Super Vet. Jim Thomas, and Sr. Super Vet. Russel Bradley.

Other events shot during the weekend were Fitasc, Make-A-Break, 5-stand, small gauge events, and super sporting. All scores can be found at I-Clays. Derrick Mein won the 50 bird Fitasc event shot by 56 competitors, with a 44 and Rick Mein was second with a 42. Class winners were: AA 1and Jr.1 won by Tanner Perry, A1 Richard Fulton, B1 Jeff Martin, C1 Daniel Thomas, D1 Thomas Bryant, E1 James Donatelli, Lady 1 Debra Taylor, Vet.1 Rick Mein, and Sup. Vet.1 Pat Marso. 5-Stand class winners were: M1 Kevin Jacobson, AA1 Justin Sturgeon, A1 Fred Matulka, B1&Sub. Jr.1 Tyler Reno, C1 William Shipman, D1 Skipper Grape, E1 James Donatelli, Sup.Vet.1 Ronnie Wegner, Vet.1 Gary Walstrom, Jr.1 Tanner Perry, and Lady1 Debra Taylor.

Out in front, in the 200-bird main event, at the end of day one was out-of-state shooter, Pat Williams, with a super score of 93, two targets ahead of Rick Mein. In the hunt for HOA were Kevin Jacobson and Tim Murphy with a pair of 89’s and Derrick Mein was one target behind with an 88. Other leaders in their respective classes were Brett Buehler B class with an 89, Debra Taylor in with a 77 to lead the ladies, Dennis Horner AA shooter with an 87, Jacob Grey leading C class and Jr., and D class leader Chris Davis with a 76. One of the favorite targets on Saturday’s course was station 11 which had a rabbit skimming over the surface of the water followed by an incomer in the air.

Day two of the main event saw some lead changes taking place as Derrick Mein shot an outstanding 94 to take over the lead, just one target ahead of his father Rick and Kevin Jacobson. Other than Mein’s 94 many of the scores seemed to drop from day one scores. At the end of the day Rick Mein and Kevin Jacobson remained tied and had to shoot off for the Runner Up spot. In the shoot off for Runner Up, Mein came away with the win by hitting 8 of 10 targets. Leaving Kevin Jacobson as Master 1. In AA Andrew Donahue came from behind to win, while A class leader from day one, Tyler Brake, took top honors. B class winner was Brett Buehler who shot a 164 total. Jacob Grey held on to win C class, as did Chris Davis in D class. E Class winner was Clayton Moniot. Debra Taylor Lady Champion was in the lead from the beginning. Tyler Reno and Jacob Grey were Sub.Jr and Jr. winners. Rick Mein captured Vet. honors, while super veteran went to Pat Marso, and Sr. Super Veteran went to Russel Bradley.

With typical Kansas weather, the shoot went without a hitch. Targets seemed to be about the right difficulty for a state championship and everyone will breathe a sigh of relief, as Derrick Mein will be heading to Ohio on Monday to start a new job, and won’t compete in the 2011 Kansas state shoot. Next years state competition will be held at Lynbrooke Sporting Clays, Augusta, Kansas.
