Kansas State Fitasc and 5-Stand

Cedar Hill Gun Club, Baldwin, Kansas - by Kay Mein

July 17-18, 2010: Cedar Hill Gun Club, Baldwin, Kansas hosted the Kansas State Fitasc and 5-Stand Championships, July 17 and 18. Main event sponsors were Hodgdon, CZ-USA, King's Construction, and White Flyer. For each event entered shooters received a ticket to be placed in a drawing for prizes including a CZ-USA gun, which was won by B class shooter Galen Lerbs.

Temperatures soared into the upper 90's with heat indexes over 100. With little or no shade the Fitasc layouts were extremely hot, couple that with no breeze and everyone was down right miserable (typical July weather in Kansas.) After refereeing Parcour 2 for one rotation I was ready for some cold ice water and air-conditioning myself. Cedar Hill employees kept plenty of ice water and shade tents on the courses to give all shooters some respite from the heat. Events provided for the weekend were two 100 bird-sporting events, 100 bird Fitasc, 100 bird 5-stand, and the small gauge events. Fitasc targets were set by Dennis Linden while the sporting events were set by Cedar Hill club owners Pat and Mike.

The 50 entrants in the Fitasc event were in for some great targets set by Dennis Linden. Day 1 scores for the Fitasc proved that Parcour 2 was the tougher of the two layouts, with the high score for the day being a 22 by Gary Walstrom followed by John Francis with a 21. Parcour 1 saw Jim Greenwood shooting a strong 24 followed by Kevin Jacobson and Rick Mein with 23's. At the end of the day Greenwood was in the lead with a 46 followed by Walstrom with a 44 and a pair of 43's from Jay Reno and Rex Echer. Day 2 of the Fitasc event seemed to be tougher than Saturday's layouts. The top score on Parcour 3 was Gary Walstom's 21 which gave him a two day total of 84 for HOA honors. Kevin Jacobson had a strong 22 on Parcour 4 to give him an 82 for the event and he was deemed In-State HOA, while John Francis held on to claim M1. Other winners for the 2-day 100 bird Fitasc were AA1 Shobe Smith, A1 Dave Wildung, B1 Gary Nafziger, C1 Josh Smith, and D1 Tiffany Lovelady. The Fitasc event had very competitive targets with no scores in the 90's for the event. When asked about the targets one comment was they were "typical Linden targets, meaning good, curling, visible, and hittable targets."

The 5-Stand event which was shot by 40 entrants saw shooters with a combination of 5 report and true pairs at each of the 5 stands for a 50 target total each day. Leading the event on Saturday was Rex Echer and Jim Greenwood with a pair of 45's. As I viewed the targets they didn't seem tough, but most shooters struggled with the combinations that were thrown. Sunday saw a change in the leader board as Rick Mein came in with a two-day total of 85; this was also good for Veteran champion. AA winner was Donnie Grannemann. Tyler Reno held on for the A class win, as did Galen Lerbs in B class. C class winner was William Shipman. James Donatelli held on for the D class top spot. Concurrent winner were Sub. Jr.1 Jared Greenwood, Jr. 1 Tyler Reno, Lady1 Tiffany Lovelady, Vet.1 Rick Mein, and Sup. Vet.1 Ronnie Wegner.

The sporting events also proved to have some difficult targets with the top score on Saturday being an 87 shot by Craig T. McMichael. Other winners were AA1 Steve Miller, A1 Kevin Maloan with an 87, B1 Greg Duffens, C1 William Graff, D1 John Diefenbach, and E1 Tina Frye. Concurrent winners were Jr.1 Tyler Thurston, Lady1 Tiffany Lovelady, Vet.1 John Patch, and Super Vet.1 Richard Fuller.  Sunday's sporting event posted some outstanding scores with Tim Murphy leading the way with a 94. Kevin Jacobson was one target behind with a 93. Other winners were AA1 William Johnson, A1 Robert Smith, B1 Galen Lerbs, C1 Eileene Duryee, D1 Connie Bramlage, and E1 Suzanne Smith. Concurrent winners were: Jr.1 Tyler Thurston, Lady1 Eileene Duryee, Vet.1 Tim Murphy, and Super Vet.1 Pat Marso.

The State Fitasc and 5-Stand Championships found hot temperatures and good targets. One comment by several shooters was how delicious the hamburgers were and for a mere $1.50 and the wonderful homemade pies. What better way to have happy shooters!
